Be A Part Of Us

In the "Good Old Days" when the Victorian industrial revolution was in full swing people were also becoming more aware of social responsibility. Up until then the parish vestries had not only looked after their flock's spiritual needs but also their physical needs. This latter was becoming too much of a financial burden so eventually the decision was made to split the the physical needs away from the vestries. Thus Parish Councils were borne. Rosemarket parish council was set up in 1886 and there were 16 members, a considerable number of which were women. If anyone is interested the original minutes of the first meetings and others are publicly available in our county records office.

Gradually, over the years there have been many changes. Both Wales and Scotland moved away from parish to community councils. Numbers of councillors fluctuated. Boundaries got moved. The way the numbers of councillors required for each council or parish was changed. Only a few years ago, our own boundaries were changed and the number of councillors required in Rosemarket was reduced from eight to six.

No matter how many councillors there are, or where the boundaries are drawn, today all council members are volunteers. All give their time freely and none get any remuneration. There is a provision for expenses but only under extremely limited circumstances. In all the years I have been attending Rosemarket council I have never heard of a single occasion when expenses have been claimed.

You elect the council. Or at least, you should do. There was an election earlier this year. Three council members made the decision not to stand again. That left three vacancies. Two existing members did stand and, as they were unopposed, they were automatically re-elected. One other person has agreed to stand and was therefore also elected. That still leaves two vacancies.

Do you like what your community council has done. Do you actually know what we have done? I'll bet that most of you you can honestly answer no to both questions. How can you change that? Agree to be co-opted on to the council. The Council meets 11 times a year and mostly the meetings last just over an hour. I am sure that you can spare around eleven hours a year to play your part. It is not difficult, it is not complicated, it is not even onerous. You are the 'community'. So take part in it. Be a part of it.
